Lupus keeps me from doing all I want to do. It requires me to accept my limitations and make choices about what I can do with the goal of maintaining optimal health.

We all have limitations. Especially when it comes to the holidays, we all must choose between what we want to do and what we can do. Trying to do it all is not possible for any of us. As coaches, we know that setting boundaries and making choices that best support our health is part of practicing life balance.

Tips for Balancing the Holidays:

Pray and ask what God has in mind for your holidays. God doesn’t have planned an event schedule that would threaten your health and steal your focus. What God has in mind for you is unique and no one can tell you what that is but God.

Ask what is God’s vision for your unique holiday season. If you identify the vision, then ask yourself what needs to happen for you to participate with God in making that happen.

Be intentional about pursuing God’s vision for your holidays. It can be challenging. You will have to set boundaries, but this approach to planning your holidays will make clear your yeses and your nos.

Stay committed to God’s plan for your unique holidays and take one step at a time. God bless you as you maintain that commitment and experience the fullness of the vision God has planned for you!

Isolation can make us susceptible to discouragement and low self-confidence. Human connection is a basic need that must be addressed in our self-care.

Whether in person or virtual, we can never rely on our clients as our primary source of human work connection. Using clients as self-care, to fulfill our need for human connection, isn’t healthy or ethical.

We need work connections that go beyond professional exchanges of information and services. We need other coaches.

While connecting in person is preferrable, we all learned during the pandemic that when it is not possible, live video connection is the next best thing. For many coaches this may be the only option for connecting with other coaches due to living in areas where there are no other coaches to connect with in person.

For your own health and wellbeing and for your own greater success as a coach, connect with other coaches!

Also. Hey introverts like me. This means you too!

Where to make connections with other coaches:

ICF – International Coaching Federation – Search the directory to find other coaches in your area. Connect with your local ICF chapter for virtual and in person events.

CCNI – Christian Coaches Network International – Search the directory to find other coaches in your area. Connect with virtual events.

Your coach education program – Check with your coaching education program. Who else from your program is located in your area?

Shared community office space – To further combat isolation, consider moving out of your home office into a shared office space. This may not connect you with other coaches, but it could connect you with other solo entrepreneurs who also need to combat isolation.

It sounds like a silly question when you ask it out loud, but it’s a question that has lurked in conversations I’ve had with potential new coaches over the last 10 years. People want to become life coaches but feel that since their lives aren’t perfect, they probably shouldn’t consider it. Or they feel like maybe someday they’ll become a coach, after they do a lot of work to get their lives in perfect order. Some new and even established coaches are held back due to lack of self-confidence or self-esteem because they are overtaken by their own perceived imperfections.

Early in my coaching career, I thought, “Wow. I want my clients to have balance, success, abundant life, and more, and I want to have integrity myself in these areas.” It was intimidating. I was tempted to feel that striving for perfection was necessary as a coach. However, at that time I called myself a recovering perfectionist, and I was so aware of the active gift of grace in my life. Making “perfection” the goal did not line up with my faith and what I saw in scripture. But I wanted to walk my talk as a coach.

For me, I had to make peace terms with my coaching terms. I had to think through what integrity, balance, abundant life and success truly meant to me and reconcile that through prayer and scripture, and with my faith and understanding of grace. This helped me to develop my own personal understanding and practice of what it means to me to walk my talk as a coach.

I’ve developed an ecourse out of this experience, to help anyone else who wants to work through this process. It’s free and I invite you to sign up for it here.

How can we step into 2017 on solid ground, free to leave 2016 in the past?

Start with what’s “left over” from 2016. There may be tasks or projects on a “to do” list that need to be completed before the ball drops on 2016. Identify what you want to complete and decide to do, dump, delegate or discern before the year is out. “Discern” refers to considering in prayer and choosing wisely based on direction from God.

As you discern, maybe there are items on your list that need to be intentionally carried into 2017. If that is the wise choice, then bring those tasks and projects intentionally and confidently into the New Year. Otherwise, deal with each by doing, dumping or delegating before the end of the year.

After dealing with your tasks and projects, resolve 2016 in light of forgiveness, gratefulness, grief and celebration.

Forgiveness. Who do you need to forgive? From whom do you need forgiveness? What will that involve? Is a direct conversation needed? If so, how will you make that happen? When will you make that happen? Remember that you cannot control anyone else’s response; you can only control your acts of or requests for forgiveness. But you can choose to do your part to resolve issues of forgiveness, with the hope of freedom from unresolved pain for yourself or someone else as the New Year begins.

Gratefulness. Who do you want to thank? Surely 2016 has included folks that merit your thanks. Who has blessed you over the past 12 months? If the task of identifying people to thank seems too big (because let’s face it there are many people to be grateful for in a year), look at the biggest challenges and highlights of the year and chose three to five people who were instrumental in helping you at those times. How will you thank them? You may want to be elaborate in your expression of gratitude and if so, go for it! But a simple “thank you” can work well, too. You can go simple, especially if the alternative is none at all.

Grief. What must you grieve? Avoiding the full experience of mourning a loss is not helpful to moving forward. If your loss is tragic and requires the support of a counselor, then by all means make 2017 a year of healing and don’t let 2016 end without identifying and scheduling with a counselor who can help you. But even the common losses, disappointments and setbacks can unnecessarily continue to drag on into 2017 if you let them. Identify losses you need to grieve and consider what it would take to go through the grief and put it behind you. You may need to allow yourself to feel your emotions. When you’re ready, you may benefit by doing something that symbolizes your intent to finish your grief and move on. For me, grieving always involves me being honest with God about my thoughts and feelings and then listening for His response and ultimate peaceful resolution. What do you need to grieve and let go of? And how will you do that?

Celebration. What can you celebrate? What from 2016 is worthy of celebration? You achieved. You grew. You were blessed. As the clock gets close to midnight on December 31 there will be great anticipation of celebrating the New Year and all that the future holds. But don’t forget to identify what you can celebrate from this year past. How will you celebrate?

I pray for you a blessed resolution to this year – one that fuels your steps into the new year with renewed strength and peace!
